Michigan courthouse shooter was detainee who took weapon from officer

July 11 (Reuters) - Two bailiffs were shot dead amid a fight with a detainee turned shooter inside a Michigan courthouse on Monday, that left two individuals injured before cops killed the shooter, a district sheriff said.

"At around 2:25 (p.m.), we had an aggravation on the third floor of the courthouse. A man has shot two bailiffs, they are both perished," Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said in a news gathering.

Bailey said the shooter was a detainee who took a firearm from one of two bailiffs escorting him to a court in the St. Joseph courthouse, and after that started shooting as he attempted to escape from authority. A sheriff's representative and non military personnel were additionally harmed, he said.

"Our hearts are torn separated. They were our companions," Bailey told correspondents. "It's a tragic day."

Bailey said the representative and non military personnel who were shot were taken to the healing center and were relied upon to survive.

The suspect was shot and murdered by cops, he said.

Chris Gautz, open data officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections, tweeted that all Department of Corrections staff were sheltered and represented.

The shootings of the bailiffs and the representative came four days after four Dallas cops and one Dallas travel cop were killed by an expert sharpshooter who guaranteed to be inspired by police utilization of deadly drive against African-Americans.

A witness, Gretta Volkenstein, told CNN that structures and government offices in the zone were set on lockdown as the episode unfurled.

It was not promptly known why the detainee was being escorted to the court. Bailey said that was a piece of the continuous examination.

"MSP (Michigan State Police) has secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and began its examination concerning the shooting that happened this evening," Governor Rick Snyder said on Twitter.

The courthouse would be shut on Tuesday, Bailey said, and he would not name any of the casualties until they families were advised.

St. Joseph is a town in southwest Michigan, crosswise over Lake Michigan from Chicago.
